We will take action against the candidate who violates the decision;
The ‘Cooperation for Ethiopian Unity’ coalition, which participated in the seventh general election of 2018, has announced to BBC Amharic that it has decided not to take over the seats it won.
The coalition’s public relations chief, Getnet Worku, told BBC Amharic that the decision was taken as a “negotiation tool” rather than accepting the election. The chief said that the coalition believed that the conditions set for participating in the election would be met, and that they could change their decision if the government responded positively to peace, the release of prisoners, and the improvement of the political environment.
Ato Getnet added that the coalition participated in the election in a process he described as “scam” to bring the government to the negotiating table. He stated that they will not recognize the election until the government negotiates and are lobbying other countries not to recognize it.
According to the official results of the Ethiopian Election Board, the coalition won a total of seven seats:
👉 Two (2) seats in the House of People’s Representatives
👉 Five (5) seats in various regional councils
Data shows that the coalition is the third-highest-voted party in Addis Ababa, Amhara, and Central Ethiopia regions, fielding a total of 1,032 candidates, after Prosperity and Ezema.
On the other hand, the coalition urged the candidates to respect the party’s common position; if there are candidates who violate the organization’s decision and enter the private council, appropriate action will be taken against them in accordance with the party’s internal regulations and code of conduct. Ato Getnet explained the party’s firm stance, saying, “No candidate can enter on behalf of the coalition; we will take action up to and including expulsion from the party.”
